What is a health coach?
As we take stock of global health in the 21st century, what do we see?
While the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that infectious diseases still pose a grave threat to human health and prosperity, we can also see that improvements in the last 200 years in medicine have vastly reduced overall mortality from bacterial and viral pathogens, particularly in developed nations. In these countries, public health crises are marked by chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. While genetic and environmental factors influence these diseases, doctors and public health experts agree that lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, stress management and sleep quality all play a critical role.
As a result, doctors are increasingly “prescribing” lifestyle modifications to their patients in addition to (or instead of) their medications. And this is where the health coach comes into the picture. You know WHAT you are supposed to do, but HOW? A coach acts as a guide and ally, helping you come to your own understanding of what your best health means to you and how to go about living it every day.
